Guwahati: The police have arrested three persons in connection with the kidnapping and killing of a five-month-old baby in Cachar district of Assam.

The infant, identified as Dhrubajyoti Nath, was the son of trader Debojyoti Nath. The assailants broke into the house on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, and abducted the infant when he was sleeping with his parents, said reports.

The kidnappers then contacted the parents and demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh but later lowered their demand to Rs 1.5 lakh. They had earlier agreed to return the baby on payment of the ransom at Didarkush, around 20 km from Kazidahar.

As soon as the police got informed, they started the investigation and were able to get hold of all the three accused by Wednesday evening itself. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that one of them confessed to murder and informed that the baby was buried at Amjurghat, around 7 km from Kazidazar.

The body was recovered around 2 am on Thursday which was found to be buried under a bridge.

According to reports, the police suspect that ransom was not the main motive behind this incident. They suspect personal motive, as one of the accused is the maternal uncle of the dead child.

This has put the entire district under a state of shock and people are questioning the police and the administration. Local residents have even blocked a road in the area to demand severe punishment for the perpetrators.

Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar has also come out to condole the grieving parents and requested the DIG (SR) and Cachar SP to fast track the proceedings against the accused and have urged death penalty for the crime.
