CM Pema Khandu during a press conference at Civil Secretariat in Itanagar

Itanagar: “Considering the reactions from people of Arunachal Pradesh, objecting the demand for Mon Autonomous Region (MAR) which resurfaced recently, I want to propose a debate on the creation of autonomous regions in the state,” said chief minister Pema Khandu during a press conference at Civil Secretariat in Itanagar on Wednesday.

“The debate will be participated by community-based organisations from MAR as well as Patkai Autonomous Region (PAR) along with other community based organisations from the state, intellectuals and youth leaders,” he said.

“A discussion on a broader manner regarding the autonomous region can only give us a clear picture,” he said.

The 17-year-old demand for creation of Mon autonomous region, which started in 2003, has re-surfaced again with the Mon Autonomous Region Demand Committee (MARDC) calling for a tripartite talk to be initiated with the state and Central government at the earliest.

According to the MARDC, the demand for creation of the Mon autonomous region, which started in 2003, is still pending before the government of India despite the state assembly passing a resolution in this regard a year later.
