Kohima: Naga lad Richard Yanthan, a native of Lakhuti village under Wokha district, has cleared the Civil Services Exam (CSE), 2019, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), results of which was declared on Tuesday.
A triumphant moment for the state of Nagaland as after a long wait of 13 years a Naga candidate has made it to the list of successful candidates.
Yanthan, son of Lt James Chenithung was ranked 133 in the coveted exam. Nagaland chief minister, deputy chief minister and many others took to Twitter to congratulate Yanthan.
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio took to twitter to congratulate: “Heartiest congratulations, Richard Yanthan on passing #UPSCExam with flying colors. As you step into a world of challenges and opportunities, I wish you good health and wisdom in the service of the nation. I also congratulate all those who cleared #UPSC2019. My best wishes to all
Adviser IT, Science and Technology, NRE Mmhonlumo Kikon also tweeted: “Congratulations to Richard Yanthan on securing the 133rd Rank in the Civil Services exams 2020. This is good news for Nagaland & all the civil service aspirants from Nagaland. It’s been a 13 years long wait/drought after Kesonyu cracked the IAS”.
On December 19 last year, Yanthan was also ranked 7th in the NCS, NPS, NSS and Allied Services 2018 exams results which was declared by the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC).
The last Naga from the state to become an IAS was Kesonyu Yhome, the present finance secretary, in 2007. Swapneel Paul from Dimapur also cleared the 2017 exam and was ranked 64th, the result for which was declared in 2018.
Deputy chief minister Y Patton also took to twitter saying: “Congratulations to Richard Yanthan on securing 133rd rank in the Civil Services Exam 2019 results announced by #UPSC today. We’re all very proud of him, and this goes on to show that our youths are second to none. My best wishes to him for the future!”

Heartiest Congratulations and wish the best to all successful candidates!” tweeted Mhathung Yanthan, Adviser to the Department of Horticulture and Border Affairs.
According to the UPSC, there are 180 vacancies for IAS services this year. Ranking 133, Yanthan is set to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) cadre.
