Agartala: Tripura police on Sunday charged senior CPIM leader and former MP Jitendra Chaudhury for rumour-mongering, criminal conspiracy and spreading communal disharmony.
Chaudhury in a social media post had allegedly blamed BJP party workers of smashing a statue at Khumulwng, the headquarters of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The Pradesh BJP Secretary Mihir Sarkar lodged an FIR against former MP Jitendra Chaudhury, and two social media handles CPIM Paschim Tripura Zilla and CPIM Tripura at West Agartala police station. The case was later transferred to Radhapur police station, where the statue of an indigenous lady, which according to authorities fell due to incessant rains.
Speaking with EastMojo, Suman Majumder, Jirania sub-division police officer from Khumulwng police station said that a case under section 120 (b), 153 (a), 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Jitendra Chaudhury.
The complaint copy of the BJP leader reads, “It is extremely unfortunate that with an ill and perverse motive and malafide intention, one of the political parties of the state, Communist Party of India (Marxist) had tried to fraudulently distort the facts and has tried to put the blame upon BJP and RSS as is clear from Facebook posts of ‘CPIM Paschim Tripura Zilla’, ‘CPIM Tripura’ and Jitendra Chaudhury, a leader of CPI(M)”.
“We see it as a criminal effort to spread communal disharmony among the different communities of the state and as it appears a deep conspiracy has been hatched by the CPI (M) to promote and spread communal violence in the state”, the complaint copy reads.
The leader also said that the statue fell due to heavy rain and storm and also claimed that a police party was present at the location when the statue fell.
“Tripura is now a functioning lab of RSS-BJP in shaping their Hindu Rashtra Model for India, where the age-old Indian culture, tradition and ethos have no place, except their fanatic Hindutwa (not Hinduism) culture. Khumulwng’s incident is nothing but a small bubble of State’s fast decaying culture and admired tradition, which are now a day in and day out affairs in every nook and corner of the State under the leadership of RSS-BJP led hoodlums”, Jitendra Chaudhury wrote.
The Tripura police also took to twitter, “Rumours are being spread on the breaking of one statue at Khumlung. Actually it fell down due to heavy rain. A police party was present at that time. Legal action is being taken against anyone spreading rumours and causing disharmony among communities”.
Reacting on this issue, Chaudhury said that he never said that the BJP or RSS cadre committed the crime and he is ready to face trial as per law.
“Let them (BJP) answer my post first. I said that from day one of the present government, their culture of violence started by dismantling statues of Lenin, Karl Marx, even the statue of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore was not spared. BJP has polluted Tripura’s political, social and cultural environment. They are treating Tripura as a laboratory of Hindutva”.
