New Delhi: In a big advantage towards the fight against the novel COVID-19, millions of COVID-19 tests would now be able to detect the virus within 90 minutes. This will be rolled out to British hospitals, care homes, and laboratories to boost capacity in the coming months.
As per the country’s health minister, the tests will comprise of 5.8 million tests using DNA and 450,000 swab tests. Neither will need to be administered by a health professional, said Matt Hancock, secretary of state for health and social care.
Additionally, these tests can detect and differentiate between the flu and COVID-19. “The fact these tests can detect flu, as well as Covid-19, will be hugely beneficial as we head into winter, so patients can follow the right advice to protect themselves and others,” Hancock said.
In a separate matter, the publicly-funded National Health Service said it would offer “Covid-friendly” treatments to cancer patients. This also includes drugs that do not have a big impact on the immune system as well.
Meanwhile, during the peak COVID-19 outbreak, Britain’s healthcare system came under severe strain. The virus has killed more than 46,000 people making it the fourth highest toll in the world.
