The incident happened in the afternoon on Saturday

New Delhi: Nine people were killed and one injured at Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatanam in Andhra Pradesh after a massive crane collapsed and fell on the workers on Saturday.

The crane collapsed during a load-testing trial. Out of the nine deceased, four were shipyard employees, and the rest were contract staff, said Visakhapatnam police commissioner RK Meena. The injured has been shifted to a hospital for further treatment.

The crane collapsed on the workers between 11 am and noon. Meanwhile, Malkapuram police are investigating the incident and relevant cases will be booked after the findings, said Meena.

Tourism minister M Srinivasa Rao, responding to the incident, said that he has already spoken to the district collector. They have sent a team of officials to the spot as well. Rao also added that he would take up the issue with CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and will see that the next of kin of the deceased family get adequate financial compensation.

After the incident, several families reached the HSL gate seeking the whereabouts of their next of kin. According to the family members, they alleged that neither the police nor the management was giving any information.

The HSL, which is located in the coastal city of Andhra Pradesh, is a government undertaking. They are involved in shipbuilding and catering to the needs of refits, ship repairs, shipbuilding, and submarine construction. It is also the oldest shipyard of the country and was founded by Walchand Hirachand, an industrialist, in 1941 under the Scindia Steamship Navigation Company. Later, in 1961, the shipyard was nationalised and was renamed Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). The shipyard was transferred to the Union ministry of defence from the ministry of shipping in 2010.
