The body of a 56-year-old man from Thoubal district was declared unclaimed

Imphal: The body of a 56-year-old man from Thoubal district in Manipur who died of COVID-19 positive early on Wednesday was declared unclaimed since the family members of the deceased refused to take it back, said an official.

This is the first COVID-19 related death in Manipur.

According to additional health director Dr K Sasheekumar Mangang, the family members of the deceased could not claim the body since the neighbours strongly opposed of bringing it back owing to the “high risk of the virus”.

Later, the body of the deceased was cremated at the Imphal Municipal Corporation crematorium site located in Imphal East district.

Since the person was declared dead at the hospital located in Imphal West, district deputy commissioner and superintendent of police took permission from the state government and carried out the cremation process, said Dr Mangang.

According to RIMS medical superintendent Dr Ch Arunkumar Singh, the deceased, identified as Sapam Basanta Singh, was admitted at the hospital on May 22 for chronic kidney failure type-V of long duration with a history of multiple session of dialysis.

He tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday.
