Agartala: The All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association has condemned the attempt of harassment and spitting on West Tripura district health officer Dr Sangeeta Chakraborty by patients undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh COVID Care Centre (CCC) in Agartala.
Speaking with reporters, Dr Chakraborty said that after the closure of maternity ward in Tripura Medical College, five post-caeserian patients were taken to the COVID Care Centre but this was opposed by some of the patients admitted there.
“When the ambulance with COVID-19 positive mothers with newborn babies reached the CCC, a group of patients who were undergoing treatment started protesting and stopped the medical team from entering the centre,” Chakraborty said.
Dr Chakraborty also said that soon after receiving the information, she rushed to the COVID centre and tried to calm them.
“I told the patients that newly born patients are waiting in the ambulance and they need to be shifted in the room, to which some of the patients started using abusive words. Even after repetitive requests to wear the mask they continued to come closer to us,” Chakraborty added.
She also said that one of the patients then started spitting upon the health worker. Later, the matter was informed to the West Tripura district chief medical officer, SDM Sadar and district magistrate.
However, the patients did not allow the newborn and the mothers to be taken inside the building and they forced them to keep on waiting for 5 hours inside the ambulance. Later, they were shifted to the Agartala Government Medical College.
“We have been working 24×7 to save lives fighting COVID-19 and such behaviour would only lower the morale of frontline workers. It is not expected from the people at a time like this,” Chakraborty added.
