Mizoram tourism minister Robert Romawia Royte

Aizawl: Mizoram tourism minister Robert Romawia Royte on Friday said the state government is framing (drafting) a fresh tourism policy, which will be an important step towards tourism development in the state.

“Though the government has an existing tourism policy, we are drafting the new policy known as Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020 to suit and meet the present situation or requirement,” he told EastMojo.

He said that the draft policy was released at a meeting of officials, tour operators, ticket agents and hotel owners on Thursday.

According to the minister, the draft policy will be circulated to various departments for in-depth study and examination and it is expected to be laid in the next assembly after the approval from the state cabinet.

He said that a re-structured and new form of tourism policy is crucial to receive funds from the Centre and other funding partners.

He claimed that the erstwhile Planning Commission and the present NITI Aayog have admitted that the tourism sector could bring developments in various fields in Mizoram.

Royte, who also is a sports minister, said that the government will train at least 20 youths as tour guides.

“Many tourists are inconvenienced due to absence of government approved tour guides. The government will send at least 20 youths to reputed institutions outside the state to undertake training on the related field,” he said.

Royte also said that the state government is mulling to construct a 5-star hotel in Aizawl to attract and facilitate tourists and added that they are expecting sanction for the project.

Though there are a number of tourist destinations in Mizoram, the number of visitors is scanty because of poor road connectivity and lack of promotion, Royte also said.

Earlier, the state government had recognised tourism as industry so as to include investors in the field.
