Agartala: A 28-year-old man accused of raping a 65-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at a village under Lefunga area of West Tripura district, said police officials.
Speaking with reporters, Lefunga police station officer-in-charge Kirtijoy Reang said that an FIR was registered by the son-in-law of the rape survivor on July 22 against the deceased over the alleged rape on July 21. He was absconding since the incident came to light.
He also said that the body of the accused was recovered at a distance from his residence.
“The body was recovered and after autopsy it was handed over to his kin. The victim was admitted in hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is known to be critical,” Reang added.
The police official also added that the deceased was an accused in another case in the past, however no complaint was registered against him.
Meanwhile the state has also registered three separate incidents of rape, including two gang rapes, in Khowai district of Tripura.
Speaking with EastMojo, Khowai district superintendent of police Dr Kiran Kumar said that three incidents were registered in the district, of which two were in Teliamura police station and one under Champahour police station.
“A 17-year-old was allegedly raped on Tuesday while she was returning home after meeting her friend. Five persons were named under the complaint made by the victim. We have arrested one person in connection with the incident,” Kiran said.
In another incident, two persons were arrested for raping a housewife under Teliamura police station.
