Guwahati: Assam Police has suspended constable Mukut Bania in connection with the assault of a 16-year-old specially-abled boy in Guwahati on Thursday.

The suspension order was announced after the video of the injured boy went viral on social media after his father Palash Chaliha uploaded it on Facebook. Chaliha showed baton marks on his child’s back and elaborated how the police on duty under the Bharalumukh Police Station beat his child when they were on the street after 6 pm to buy medicines for him on Thursday.

Mukut Bania, the armed constable, allegedly was the one who assaulted the boy and hence was suspended on Friday. State’s police director-general, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta even said that this was an isolated incident and that he regretted it. Additionally, ADGP (law & order) GP Singh even visited Chaliha’s house on Friday and expressed regret on behalf of Assam Police.

Assam Police even asked Guwahati police commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta to put up a draft charge, statement of allegation, etc, as soon as possible.

Moreover, in a press release issued by Sishu Sarothi, executive director Ketaki Bardalai condemned the incident. “We strongly condemn this heinous act of the policemen that is violative of the boy’s human rights, his rights as a young adolescent (under the Juvenile Justice Act ), as a person with disability (under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016) and the Disability Inclusive COVID Guidelines of the Dept of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (MSJ&E), as well as the ASDMA’s SOP for Emergency Support for Persons with Disabilities in context of COVID 19 vis-à-vis floods,” she said.

She added that the organisation seeks an appropriate stern and deterrent action against the policemen who beat up the 16-year-old who suffers from cerebral palsy.
