Imphal: In an alarming medical situation in Manipur, two boys’ hostels at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal have been completely sealed after one of the hostellers’ mother tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

According to medical superintendent of JNIMS Hospital, Prof T Rajen Singh, a final-year medical student of the institute and a resident of Thoubal Wangkhem had returned to the hostel from his home on July 14.

While staying at home, the medical student had reportedly stayed with his mother from July 12 to 14. After he came back to the hostel, the student, an inmate of the boys’ hostel number 2, had visited his friends and shared meal together at hostel number 3, he said.

Soon after the report of the student’s mother testing COVID-19 positive, JNIMS administration issued an order for immediate sealing of the two hostels of the boys section around 9 pm on Tuesday.

All entry and exit in these two hostels are strictly prohibited until further notice, Singh said.

Meanwhile, at least 53 medical students who are currently staying at these two hostels were tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday morning, as per the JNIMS medical superintendent’s instructions.

Further course of action shall be taken as per the result of the test, said Prof Singh.

“All of them have tested negative on TrueNat and now we are waiting for RT PCR test result. We should receive the test result this evening,” said Dr K Soreingam, who is also the warden at hostel number 2.

Fortunately, many students have been away from the hostels due to ongoing pandemic lockdown, he added.

Following the report of spiraling cases of COVID-19, including persons with no travel history in the state, a total curfew was imposed in Thoubal district on Tuesday by district deputy commissioner N Bandana Devi.

At least 25 persons from Thoubal district were among the 90 fresh cases who tested positive for COVID-19 in Manipur in the last 24 hours.

The total confirmed cases in the state are 2,015 and the number of active and recovered cases is 631 and 1,384, respectively, so far.
