After Hema Chowdhary’s arrest, Nagaland cops warn social media users

Kohima: A day after cyber crime accused and Mumbai-based animal rights activist Hema Chowdhary was brought to the state, Nagaland police warned social media users of “unwarranted comments” in order to ensure that “due of law” is maintained.

Chowdhary was arrested in connection with a video posted on Youtube/ Facebook on July 4 and was arrested on July 17 in connection with Cyber Crime PS C/No. 08/2020 U/S 153A/ 153B/ 505(1)/ 505 (2) IPC R/W 3(r)/ 3(s)/ 3(u) SC/ST (POA) Act.

An update from the Nagaland Police said that the arrest of Hema Chowdhary by the Nagaland Police from Mumbai through a non-bailable warrant issued by the Magistrate Court, Kohima is attracting a lot of comments and trolling on various social media platforms.

The Nagaland police informed that the investigation is an ongoing process and is sub-judice lying within the jurisdiction of the court. It therefore cautioned that “unwarranted comments and trial on social media by one and sundry may violate the law, including the rights of the accused”.

The cops appealed all to “desist from unwarranted trolling comments especially in public domain, so as to ensure that “due of law” is maintained and does not result in infraction of law unwittingly”.

The accused was brought to Nagaland from Mumbai via Delhi and Imphal on Monday. Earlier the police said that in the video, Chowdhary made “derogatory statements against the Nagas conducing to public mischief and also promoting enmity between different groups of people, which is pre-judicial to maintenance of harmony”.
