Kohima: Mumbai-based animal rights activist, Hema Chowdhary, who was arrested by the Nagaland Police in Mumbai has been brought to the state on Monday.
An update from SP (Crime) and PRO Manoj Kumar said that Chowdhary was arrested in connection with a video posted on Youtube/Facebook on July 4. A case was registered vide Cyber Crime PS Case No. 08/2020 U/S 153A/153B/505(1)/505(2) IPC R/W 3(r)/3(s)/3(u) SC/ST (POA) Act.
“In the video, the said person has made derogatory statements against the Nagas conducing to public mischief and also promoting enmity between different groups of people, which is pre-judicial to maintenance of harmony,” it said.
It informed that a non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued by the chief judicial magistrate, Kohima against Hema Chowdhary. Subsequently, a team of Nagaland Police, led by a deputy SP rank officer, had proceeded to Mumbai on July 15.
In collaboration with the Mumbai Police, the accused was tracked to her residence in Oshiwara, Mumbai and was arrested on July 17. It revealed that on completion of the arrest formalities, a transit remand of four days was granted by the Mumbai Court on July 18.
The accused has been brought to Nagaland from Mumbai via Delhi and Imphal on Monday. It informed that all standard operating protocols as per the guidelines issued by State Health & Family Welfare Department relating to Covid-19 pandemic are being adhered to.
Further investigation into the offence will be made as per the laid down procedures of law, it added.
