Rhino horn consumers reveal why a legal trade alone won't save rhinos

Guwahati: Assam is now in the grip of the second wave of annual flood which is causing loss of life and property across the state. Even the animals in the national parks are not safe, as over 80 animals have already lost their lives due to the flood so far with 95% of the parks ge inundated.

In a recent video shared by the Kaziranga National Park administration on Saturday, an extremely exhausted rhino was seen lying on National Highway (NH) 37. It had reportedly strayed out of the park near the Bandar Dhubi area of Bagori range.

However, in anew development that will bring cheer to many, another video shared by the park authorities on Sunday shows the rhino regaining strength.

The video was shared on the official Twitter handle of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve. “He (Rhino who strayed out) has moved into the Park Territory. He is regaining his strength. Team @kaziranga_ is giving him his natural food. We along with @nagaonpolice are guarding the area for his safety. Thank you everyone for the support,” it tweeted.

Meanwhile, just on Saturday, a total of 59 camps were affected in the park out of which six had to be vacated. A total of 96 animals have lost their lives in the floods and 132 animals were rescued, as reported by the DFO of Eastern Assam Wildlife division.

Time cards have been issued to the vehicles plying on NH-37 for the safety of wild animals; as they have started moving towards higher grounds crossing the national highway adjacent to Kaziranga National Park. Three hog deer died in Kaziranga, and five were rescued. Forest guards have intensified patrolling on the highway to check poaching and capture of wild animals for illegal trade.
