With this, the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Assam now stands at 57

Guwahati: As the nation battles with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Assam witnessed four more causalities to this virus. State’s minister of health and family welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma called it an “irreparable loss” in his tweet.

“In an irreparable loss to four families, I am anguished to share that Sri Pramod Chandra Sarma (62, Kamrup Metro), Smt Binapani Das (78, Kamrup Metro), Sri S K Wagle (46, Cachar) and Sri Prasanta Saikia (74, Tinsukia) succumbed to #COVID19. My heartfelt condolences,” he wrote on Twitter.

This takes the state’s total death toll to 57. With 1,117 COVID-19 cases registered on Saturday, Assam as of now has a total of 7,760 active COVID-19 patients. The city of Kamrup (Metro) alone detected 515 positive cases on Saturday.

Meanwhile, addressing media persons in Guwahati on Saturday, the state government made some partial modifications to its earlier order on lockdown for two weeks starting from July 19 till August 2.

However, India as a whole is witnessing a fall in the COVID-19 case fatality rate. In a statement issued by the Union health ministry, it stated that the combined efforts of the Centre and state/UT governments on proper and efficient medical management of COVID-19 pandemic have ensured India’s case fatality rate to fall below 2.5% for the first time. “India has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world,” the ministry added.

Moreover, there are 29 states and UTs with case fatality rates lower than the national average. A total of five states and UTs have a zero case fatality rate, while 14 states and UTs have a case fatality rate of even less than 1%.
