Incessant rain worsens Assam flood situation, 24.9 lakh affected

New Delhi: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that extremely heavy rainfall measuring at 20 centimetres a day is likely to occur in several parts of Northeast India triggering floods in many areas.

As per Central Water Commission (CWC) authorities, flood alert have been issued in districts along rivers in Assam, Sikkim, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and North Bengal region.

The monsoon is gradually expected to shift towards the north in the Himalayas in the next 24 hours. The onset of south-westerlies and southerly winds from Bay of Bengal over northeast and eastern India will lead to very heavy rainfall in the region.

Heavy rain is also expected over the western Himalayan regions, northern part of Haryana and Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh and Bihar.

Extremely heavy rain is also expected to occur in Uttarakhand, eastern UP, Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh from Thursday till Saturday, according to a weather report published by the IMD.

IMD has also issued a red category warning for the entire northeast India from July 9 to July 11.

“The Brahmaputra river is continuing to be in spate all through its reach from Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district to Dhubri in lower Assam. Its tributaries such as Jia Bharali, Burhi Dihing, Desang, Dikhow, and Beki are also flowing in severe flood situations. There is a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in of Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Baksa, Nalbari, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, and Dhubri districts in Assam and in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts in north Bengal and in Siang, Lohit, Anjaw districts of Arunachal Pradesh and in all the four districts of Sikkim,” stated Central Water Commission in its report.
