Assam peasant leader Akhil Gogoi tests positive for COVID-19: Reports

Guwahati: Assam peasant leader and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

Gogoi, who is languishing in Guwahati Central Jail for his role in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) agitation across the state, underwent swab test and was exhibiting some of the signs of the COVID-19 virus during the last couple of days. He was also diagnosed with kidney stone, gastric ulcer recently.

Sources close to KMSS informed that Gogoi was also suffering from high fever in the jail in the past few days.

Earlier, senior Congress leader and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi demanded the government for immediate release of the peasant leader among others.

Over 1,200 prisoners in Guwahati Central Jail also staged a two-day-long mass revolt and hunger strike demanding immediate release of the peasant leaders, including Akhil Gogoi.

Earlier in the day, senior peasant leaders of the state, Bitu Sonowal and Dhaijya Konwar, also reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and were shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
