Shillong: Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, deputy commissioner Matsiewdor War has appealed residents to come together and maintain simple health protocols to keep the virus at bay.
Of the total 54 active COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya, East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 33 cases — the highest among the districts in the state.
As of Wednesday, Ri Bhoi has reported 15 COVID-19 cases, West Garo Hills three, South West Garo Hills two and East Jaintia Hills one case so far.
Speaking with EastMojo, deputy commissioner War said: “I would ardently request to all our citizens to please understand and take it upon yourselves. This is your place, this is your own people, let us love and take care of each other. And we can do that by maintaining very simple protocols, that is, wearing masks, maintaining social distance and to follow coughing etiquettes, among others. They are not difficult to take care of and I am sure that each one of us is concerned and we should not let our guard down.”
“I would request everyone to cooperate and not to wait for the government or for anyone to wear a mask. Take it upon yourselves to say that it is important to wear a mask and so let me wear one.”
She added, “We have seen our neighbouring states and how they are suffering because of the spike in cases. We would like that our district remains away from all of that. I would request everyone to cooperate and not to wait for the government or for anyone to wear a mask. Take it upon yourselves to say that it is important to wear a mask and so let me wear one.”
War urged the citizens to come together and to work together.
Talking about lockdown, War said: “We don’t want to go back to that space because we know for sure that at the same time the livelihoods of the people have been affected. We need to understand that we have to carry on with our work and if we have to live with the disease we have to learn how to live with it for as long as the cure is not there.
