Tripura: How vegetable vendor's son topped Class X board exams

Agartala: Meet Dipayan Debnath, a student of Netaji Subhash Vidyaniketan, who stood first in the Tripura Board of Secondary Education’s (TBSE) ‘Madhyamik’ (Class X board) examination (new syllabus) with 488 marks out of 500 despite facing a lot of challenges and difficulties.

Dipayan’s father Nabakumar is a vegetable vendor in Agartala, who is the lone breadwinner of the family, while his mother Tapashi is a homemaker.

Speaking with reporters, Nabakumar said his son studied for 10 to 12 hours a day and attended all the classes and exams seriously.

“I have always dreamt of becoming one among the top 10 students and today I have stood first in the state. I am really happy and I think anybody can do this with determination and seriousness towards studies,” Dipayan said.

He also said that he aspires to become a software engineer and do something for society through the use of technology.

“It was difficult for us to get till here. Being a vegetable seller, I had very limited sources of income to get him tuition, but we received help from his private tutors. Many of them provided him free coaching classes. My elder brother and nephew helped us with his textbooks,” Dipayan’s father said.

The family members were happy about the success of Dipayan and congratulated him for the grand success. His mother Tapashi sought support from chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and education minister Ratan Lal Nath for his higher studies.

The chief minister also congratulated the students of Madhyamik Class X who successfully passed the board examinations this year.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “I congratulate all students who have crossed a step in their lives with TBSE declaring results today. I pray for their good health and successful future to Mata Tripurasundari,” he wrote.

The exams were conducted from March 2 to March 26 this year, around 44,747 students had appeared in the exams.

The papers for the new syllabus were over, but due to lockdown some papers of the old syllabus and Madrasa students were postponed.

The Tripura Board of Secondary Education was established in 1973 by an Act (Tripura Act number 12) called Tripura Board of Secondary Education Act 1973 passed by Tripura Legislative Assembly.

The pass percentage of Madhyamik students has been recorded at 69.49% this year, while a total of 24 students made it to the top 10 list.

Dipayan topped the board from Netaji Subhash Vidyaniketan with 488 marks, while Megha Sharma, Trishashree Dewan and Abhiraj Paul jointly secured the second position with 487 marks.
