Tinsukia: Pasighat West MLA Pradesh Ninong Ering of Arunachal Pradesh wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday requesting him to “ban Chinese spy instrument Huawei” in our country, terming it a big threat to privacy of citizens and a tool for mass surveillance.
The development came close on the heels of the US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) having formally designating Chinese Telecom Huawei Technologies Company and ZTE, their parents and subsidiaries, as well as affiliated firms, as national security threat and putting a ban on them, and three days after the India banned 59 Chinese mobile applications citing “emergent threats” to the country’s sovereignty and national security.
The 59 banned apps include popular mobile apps such as TikTok, UCBrowser and ShareIt, which together command several hundred million users in the India.
Speaking to this correspondent, Ering — a former MP from Arunachal East constituency — said that Huawei is a Chinese multinational technology company founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the Chinese army. “The Galwan valley incident, in which we lost 20 soldiers, is a warning of Chinese design and reminds us to be alert from China on all fronts – be it borders or the Chinese companies,” he said.
“The United States has already placed Huawei on the entity list, this limiting the business US companies could do with it due to various security reasons posed by the company,” Ering said, adding: “It is need of the hour to ban Huawei, one of the biggest international companies in the telecom sector, which working as a secret service agency and collecting information from India and passing it to China.”
The one-page letter reads that in the present state of affairs between the two countries, considering China’s history, any compromise to security especially cyber security is non-negotiable. “Therefore, it is advisable to put a ban on products by Huawei as they are a potential threat to sovereignty and security of the nation and it’s citizens,” it read.
