Guwahati: Five persons — out of 13 whose swab samples were collected from Assam MLA Hostel in Guwahati — tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Apart from senior BJP leader and legislator Narayan Deka and his daughter, Kangshita Deka; his driver, Jintu Barman; two personal security officers (PSOs), Sukanta Das and Abjalur Rahman; have also tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Deka is the second Assam legislator to be detected as COVID-19 positive as another BJP leader and legislator, Krishendu Pal, has already been declared as coronavirus positive. Apart from this, two of the security personnel of Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass have also been detected COVID-19 positive.
Sources informed that Barkhetri MLA Narayan Deka tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday as his swab test was conducted on Tuesday.
Both the personal security officers (PSOs) of Deka have already been shifted to hospital.
Meanwhile, sources further alleged that even before announcement of his swab test as positive, the Barkhetri MLA was almost regularly meeting people in different locations in his constituency.
The MLA also visited the residence of one of the students from his constituency who secured a top position during the recently declared HS examination without wearing mask, sources alleged, adding: Deka visited different locations of his constituency almost seven to eight days ago.
Prior to Deka, Patharkandi legislator Krishendu Pal also tested positive for COVID-19. However, Pal is out of danger now and is under home quarantine these days.
Meanwhile, it is also reported that four security personnel of Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass have also tested positive for COVID-19.
Sources close to Dass maintained that the Sorbhog legislator of Assam assembly has been maintaining extra care despite his busy schedule.
