Guwahati: People in the 11 wards of Guwahati in Assam which had been locked down from June 23 can move around in nearby markets on Saturday and Sunday to stock up essentials for the total lockdown effective in Kamrup (Metro) district from Sunday midnight.
In the view of rising number of COVID-19 cases in the city, state health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced a total lockdown in the district for a fortnight, effective from Sunday midnight. During the stringent lockdown, even grocery shops and essential item shops will remain closed, except for pharmacies and medical services.
An order from the office of the Deputy Commission of the district said that for a limited period during the weekend, residents of the lockdown zones can purchase essetials.
The order read “…for facilitating purchase of essential items from the market and for carrying out of other emergency works, trstrictions imposed in ward wise lockdown zones are relaxed from 8 AM to 4 PM on 27th and 28th June’2020.”
It further advised the residents of the lockdown zones to visit nearby markets and avoid overcrowding and to maintain COVID-19 protocols.
On June 23, a total lockdown was enforced in Ward no 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (partial), 15 and 16 of Guwahati Municipal Corporation.
