Tinsukia: A 55-year-old assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Assam Police has received appreciation on social media after Dibrugarh Police tweeted that he risked his life and jumped into water to save two persons, including a minor, from drowning. He was joined by a civilian in this heroic act.

The brave hearts — ASI Purnananada Saikia of Borbaruah Police Station and Akhil Sarkar, a private employee — both are residents of Nirmaligaon under Dibrugarh police station where the incident took place.

Dibrugarh Police tweeted on Thursday at 6.25 pm: “We are proud of ASI Purnananda Saikia of Borboruah PS who did not think twice before jumping into the water to save two drowning boys. Such daredevilry during times of natural disaster doubles our ‘josh’ to keep working for the public security.”

In not time, the tweet got viral and all round appreciation for his bravery act poured in.

Yogesh Kumar, a tweeter user, tweeted: Really a true soldier. No words to appreciate such an act of ultimate bravery.

Manuh paanit porigoise (Someone has fallen in water) was a cry for help, I heard, and rushed out of my home to see two persons trying to keep their head out of water,” Saikia, told this correspondent over phone.

Saikia added, “I and Sarkar, another resident of the same locality, jumped and dragged them out of water.”

The persons, who have been saved, have been identified as Priyangsu Malakar, 12, and Debnath Dey, 40 — both hailing from Lakhi Nagar in Dibrugarh.

Saikia said that they had gone for fishing and the minor boy was pulled by the water current when he threw the fishing net.

“Dey jumped to save him and got himself almost drowned.”

Talking to this correspondent, superintendent of Dibrugarh Police, Sreejith T, said, “In the morning when he was at his home, he heard a hue and cry. He rushed out of his house to see two boys struggling to keep their heads out of the water. He along with another person jumped and rescued the both. The director general of Assam police spoke to him and promised him a commendation certificate. I and the deputy commissioner of Dibrugarh Police, Pallav Gopal Jha, felicitated him.”
