New Delhi: After the recent abduction and torture of two high commission staffers, India asked the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to reduce staff by 50%. This decision is to be implemented within seven days.

The ‘Charge d’ Affaires’ was summoned by the ministry of external affairs and informed that India had repeatedly expressed concern about the activities of officials of his High Commission. “They have been engaged in acts of espionage and maintained dealings with terrorist organizations” stated the release adding that the activities of the two officials caught red-handed and then expelled on 31 May 2020 was one example.

As per reports, the abducted staffers were thrashed, beaten with rods, punched, forced to drink filthy water, and were pressured to confess about their involvement in an alleged hit-and-run case.

The behavior of Pakistan and its officials are not in conformity with the Vienna Convention and bilateral agreements on the treatment of diplomatic and consular officials. “On the contrary, it is an intrinsic element of a larger policy of supporting cross-border violence and terrorism,” the press note added.
