Guwahati: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi over phone on India’s membership to the powerful UN Security Council as non-permanent member for a two-year term.

Sonowal stated this as recognition to India’s efforts for ensuring global peace and security under the leadership of the Prime Minister and a step forward in the country’s march towards becoming a global powerhouse.

India has been overwhelmingly elected as a non-permanent member of the powerful UN Security Council for a two-year term, in an unprecedented election where envoys from the 192 member states voted wearing masks and in adherence to the strict social distancing norms due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India, the endorsed candidate from the Asia-Pacific states, won 184 votes out of the 192 ballots cast in the elections for the five non-permanent seats of the Security Council, the world organisation’s most powerful organ.

India’s two-year term as the non-permanent member of the UNSC would begin from January 1, 2021. Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway also won the Security Council elections.

In a statement, chief minister Sonowal said that due to the bold leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India attained a unique position in the global platform in recent years. He said that yoga earned global recognition and the world community adopted it as a practice for healthy life-style. Further, in the fight against COVID-19, India stood together with the global community and people world-over acknowledged India’s role in dealing with this pandemic.

Thanking Prime Minister Modi for India’s rise in the global platform, chief minister Sonowal hoped that during its two-year term, India would work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience, and equity.
