Dimapur: Dimapur 24/7, one of the most influential and active social media platforms in Nagaland’s Dimapur district, has been feeding the homeless and also imparting information about the novel coronavirus amid the pandemic.
With the detection of the first coronavirus case from Dimapur in the last week of March, who was later shifted to Guwahati in neighbouring Assam, the state’s commercial hub was under lockdown, which in turn led to a lot of migrant workers getting homeless and starting to sleep on the streets of the town.
While speaking with EastMojo, Annie Jain, the Director of Dimapur 24/7, said: “Some members of the Dimapur 24/7 group came in touch with those homeless people and since May 8, the team — with the permission of the authority concerned — started to distribute packed food containing bread, buns, banana, biscuits, mixtures of bhujia, namkin and water to those homeless people.”
“Team Dimapur 24/7 distributes food packets mainly around the town areas like under the flyover, New Market area, Gurudwara, supermarket, near NST office, and so on,” Jain added.
According to Jain, while initially they distributed around 30 packets a day, as the days went by, they started to distribute around 80-100 packets daily. “At the moment, we even distribute more than 100 packets a day,” she added.
When asked why the team started the initiative, Jain said: “Dimapur 24/7 is not only a social media platform. It is mainly formed for charity and humanitarian services.” The team has also been visiting various old-age homes and orphanages during the pandemic with the help of some selfless donors and also the effort of the team, added the convenor.
“The team is not funded by any government, neither it’s an NGO,” said Jain, adding: “Team Dimapur 24/7 will keep on with the good deed.”
