Guwahati: In the last 24 hours, India reported 10,956 new COVID-19 cases and 396 deaths, taking India’s tally to 2,97,535 cases with 8,498 deaths, which is the fourth highest in the world, after US, Brazil and Russia.

India with its biggest single-day spike in the last 24 hours of over 10,000 cases, surpassed United Kingdom’s tally of 2,91,409 reported cases, pushing it to the 5th spot.

Worldwide, 75,26,784 people have been infected with the highly contagious virus, and 421,695 COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded.

United States is leading the COVID-19 tally around the globe with 2,023,347 cases according to the tally by Johns Hopkins University. Followed by Brazil at 802,828 cases and Russia at 510,761 cases.

In terms of COVID-19 related deaths, India doesn’t appear as a front runner. USA, UK, Italy, Brazil and France have reported the highest deaths.

Maharashtra continues to top the chart with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country. As of Friday morning, the state recorded total 97,648 cases of coronavirus. While 47,980 of these are active, over 46,000 people have been released/ cured so far. The death toll in the state stands at 3,590.

Delhi with over 20,000 active cases and Tamil Nadu, with 17,662 cases are the other states to report high COVID-19 cases.

A surveillance study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revealed that only 0.73% of the population included in the survey showed evidence of past exposure to COVID-19.
