Imphal: A joint operation between the Assam Rifles and state police was successful in recovering huge cache of arms and ammunition in Tengnoupal district on Wednesday.
According to the official statement, a joint search operation was carried out near Karongthel based on multiple reliable inputs regarding concealed weapons and warlike stores.
During the detailed search, the troops recovered two well-concealed plastic bags containing the weapons. The recovered weapons include one SLR, three action rifles, 3 point 32mm pistols, at least 3,910 rounds of assorted ammunition and one YESU radio set. All the seized items were handed over to Tengnoupal police station for further investigation.
On the same day, the troops launched two separate searches and recovered smuggled contraband items worth lakhs and arrested six individuals at Khudengthabi in Tengnoupal.
Jankhai Haokip from Moreh was arrested with suspected Brown sugar in soap cases weighing .415 grams supposed to be transported from Moreh to Imphal.
In another incident, troops of Tengnoupal battalion checked a vehicle and recovered a suspected Brown sugar weighing 3.368 kg worth crore in the international market. Four persons were arrested in connection with the case, and identified as James Vaiphei, 22, Seiminlun Baite, 17, both from Tengnoupal district, and Paolinlan Haokip, 34 along with a woman named Nengkhotin Haokip from Churachandpur.
On June 9, troops of Assam Rifles along with Manipur police in joint operation seized 950 cases of IMFL worth lakhs from a truck plying on National Highway 37 near Khongsang in Noney district.
As per reports, the detained truck was supposedly carrying edible oil from Silchar to Imphal. Troops while doing a thorough search recovered well concealed 950 cartons of IMFL stacked below. The recovered items have been handed over to Khongsang police station for institutional destruction, the official said.
