Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh will soon be able to carry out radiation treatment for patients with cancer with the installation of the latest Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine by September this year.

This was mentioned during the launch of a 30-bed chemotherapy services in the hospital by Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF). The development took place on June 5 through a joint venture between government of Assam and Tata Trusts. The facility was launched by Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in presence of minister of state for health & family welfare Pijush Hazarika, among several others.

This unit will be staffed by a senior medical oncologist and trained nurses who will work in close coordination with the various departments of AMCH to provide comprehensive care to cancer patients.

Set up in December 2017, ACCF is in the process of building 10 state-of-the-art cancer centres in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Darrang, Kokrajhar, Silchar and Diphu. The geographical spread intends to reduce the travel and hardships of cancer patients across the state.

In order to launch cancer services in the interim, a collaboration model was developed with the support of AMCH, where ACCF provides chemotherapy services and co-morbidities and support services are handled by AMCH. The same model will be replicated in other government medical colleges in the coming months.

“This is a good model of clinical collaboration leading to better outcomes for the patients. It cuts travel time and disruption for patients who are currently travelling to Guwahati or outside Assam. We hope to see this model replicated in other medical colleges soon,” mentioned Sarma, who also chairs ACCF.
