Agartala: A doctor in Tripura tested positive for COVID-19, along with eight other BSF jawans deployed at Agartala-Akhaura integrated check post (ICP) along the India-Bangladesh border, said West Tripura district chief medical officer, Dr Debashish Das said.
Speaking with reporters, Dr Das said that the doctor was working with the screening team at Agartala-Akhaura integrated check post for screening and testing all incoming-outgoing persons in the state from Bangladesh.
He also said that her samples were collected few days ago and the report came positive on Saturday. At the same time, samples of some of the BSF personnel were collected and they too tested positive for the virus.
“The BSF jawans deployed at the ICP have tested positive for the virus. Today, we sent them to the COVID care centre in Hapania international fairground,” Das said.
The doctor and the eight BSF jawans were part of the 55 cases which were reported on Saturday evening in Tripura, taking the total number of positive cases to 750 in the state.

Sadar sub-divisional magistrate Ashim Saha said that the doctor was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Saturday and was sent to the COVID care centre in Shaheed Bhagat Singh youth hostel for treatment on Sunday.

“The frontline workers are working tirelessly and there is always a chance of getting infected. But we have to understand as we are working for the society,” Saha said.
The state government had deployed medical staff at the Agartala-Akhaura integrated check post in the months of January with the outbreak of coronavirus.

Earlier, on May 28, a total of 235 Indian residents were evacuated from Bangladesh including 106 Tripura residents, who entered through Agartala-Akhaura integrated check post.
Among the returnees, a total of 10 people had tested positive for the virus following which the samples of the contacts was also collected.

A total of 55 people had tested positive on Saturday in state, including 33 people from Sepahijala district, 13 from West Tripura district, three from Gomati and two each from North Tripura and Dhalai, and one from Khowai district.
