Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday visited the family of Havildar Bijoy Debbarma, the Indian Army man from the state who was martyred in the line of duty along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

During his short visit, Deb paid his tribute to the martyred jawan at his ancestral village in Guliraibari under Sepahijala district.

He also interacted with the family members of the jawan and later handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund to the wife of late Bijoy Debbarma.

Taking to twitter, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb wrote, “Paid homage to brave Martyr of Indian Army, Bijoy Debbarma at his residence in Guliraibari, Bishramganj. Condolences to his family in this hour of grief. Handed over a cheque of ₹5 lakhs to his family from CMRF. Lt. Bijoy Debbarma is a pride of our State. I salute his sacrifice.”

Debbarma met with an accident when a large chunk of ice fell on him on May 22. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, an official informed.

The mortal remains of the martyred officer was brought back to state on Friday and was kept in the state headquarters at Salbagan, around 8 km from Agartala.

On Saturday, he was accorded last respects before his body was taken to his native village in Gulibari under Sepahijala district.
