Agartala: As the number of novel coronavirus patients is soaring in the state with people returning from different parts of the country and abroad, eight Kuwait returnees tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Wednesday.
A total of 136 Indian nationals, including 46 Tripura residents, were deported from Kuwait in a special flight to Guwahati airport on May 29.
They were brought back to the state in two buses arranged by the state government from Guwahati to Agartala.
The samples of 46 Kuwait returnees were collected for the test and on Wednesday night, eight persons tested positive for the virus.
The eight patients who returned from Kuwait are part of 102 cases which were reported by chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb late on Wednesday night.
Tripura reported the biggest spike of 151 on Wednesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 622.
So far, 173 patients have recovered.
“Among the eight people from Kuwait who have tested positive, one belongs to Unakoti district, three from South Tripura and four from Sepahijala district,” a health official informed.
Earlier, among the 106 Tripura residents returning from Bangladesh, 10 persons had tested positive for the virus.
An Air Indian special flight with 13 medical students from Ukraine landed in Guwahati on Tuesday. Their samples were collected in Guwahati airport and arrangement for their stay was made by the Assam government. The reports are likely to come later on Thursday.
Meanwhile, four more under-trial prisoners have tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday night at Central Correctional Home in Sepahijala district, around 30 km from state capital Agartala.
Earlier, on Tuesday an under-trial accused drug paddler had tested positive for the following which close contacts were traced and their samples was collected for the test.
With four more persons testing positive from the central correctional home, the administration has decided to collect samples of other contacts and officials who had physical contacts with them to contain the spread.
