Imphal: Two more persons, including a woman from Kamjong district and a man from Imphal West, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday evening, taking the total confirmed cases in the state to 83.

The active cases of novel coronavirus has increased to 72 after 11 persons recovered from the virus.

The 19-year-old woman from Kamjong district had returned from Chennai by train, whereas the 25-year-old man belongs to the group of returnees from Delhi.

According to additional health director Dr K Sasheekumar Mangang, samples of the latest two positive cases were tested at Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Earlier, three Delhi returnees, including one woman, from Chandel district, aged 17, 20 and 26, were tested for novel coronavirus.

A total of five cases of COVID-19 were detected on Monday, the official said.

All of them have now been shifted to COVID-19 care facility at JNIMS and RIMS and their condition is said to be stable, Dr Mangang said.

Since the latest cases are returnees from metro cities by trains, various preventive measures, including contact tracing and containment process, has been carried out without wasting much time, he said.

Officials have also appealed the residents to maintain social distancing, wearing face masks and hand hygiene as preventive measures to avoid community transmission of the virus.
