Agartala: Five years after the Left Front government’s decision to introduce polygraph test in the state forensic centre, the BJP-IPFT led state government has decided to set up lie-detection or polygraph centre at the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL) to strengthen criminal investigation and effective policing, said law minister Ratan Lal Nath.

Speaking at a press conference, Nath said that the work for setting up of a lie detection or polygraph unit under home department at state’s forensic laboratory is underway.

“The state cabinet has given approval for to set up the lie detection centre under the home department for investigation on criminals. The lie detection is very crucial in this modern investigation era; therefore it will be added to the state forensic laboratory soon,” Nath said.

“A senior scientific officer will be recruited in the rank of Group-A gazette officers through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) for the lie detection centre. The candidates would have to face a 180-mark written exam and 20 marks for personal interview before being recruited for the post,” Nath added.

In India, since 2010, following Supreme Court judgment, lie detection is legal, provided the investigating agency procures necessary permission from the accused in front of requisite authorities like a judicial magistrate.

Meanwhile, it is learned that proposal for establishing the lie detection centre was made in June 2015, and the then Left Front government led by then chief minister Manik Sarkar had also given the nod. However, for some unknown reasons, the centre was never established.
