Imphal: Manipur governor Najma Heptulla on Saturday consented to set up a 100-bedded temporary COVID-19 care centre at UNACCO School in Meitram, Imphal West to treat mild and very mild cases of those patients infected by the novel coronavirus.
The decision was taken following a meeting with state health officials, health mission and authorities of UNACCO School chaired by chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday on establishing the centre in view of the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in Manipur.
At present, Manipur has a total of 60 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, of which 53 are active and seven discharged from hospitals.
The number of persons infected by COVID-19 in Manipur has increased and the need for establishment of such a center is justified, read an order issued by governor Heptulla.
This is the first such centre being set up at a private property in the state after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
As per the official statement, the state health department has agreed to bear the expenditure in running the centre. Moreover, the health department has indicated that the arrangements of infrastructure and personnel that would be made for utilising the building as COVID-19 care centre would be done by the department concerned.
As on May 29, a total number of 2,24,073 passengers have been screened from various entry points, including Imphal Airport. At least 8,249 samples has been tested, of which 62 have tested positive for COVID-19.
Since early May, after Manipur government initiated the drive to evacuate stranded residents in various parts of the country, at least over 14,000 passengers have arrived in the state by various transportation modes.
As per the reports, as many as 4,483 people are at institutional quarantine centres and around 10,370 returnees are at their respective district’s community quarantine centres.
