Guwahati: In a fierce exchange of gunfire between six unknown miscreants and a forest patrolling team around 6. 45 pm on Thursday, a poacher was shot dead at Dikhangsi Tiniali inside Doldoli Reserve Forest of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.
On Thursday, a patrolling party was sent towards the old Sankartila area. On returning to the Rane headquarters, a group of six people was seen in the Dikhangsi Tiniali area around 6.45 pm. On being asked by the forest team for any valid documents or pass for entry into the Doldoli Reserve Forest, the miscreants started firing at the forest patrolling team.
After an exchange of gunfire, one accused was found lying on the ground with a bullet injury. The rest of them managed to escape taking advantage of the dense vegetation and darkness. The injured person was then brought to Dhansiri Primary Health Centre for medical treatment, but the doctor on duty declared him “brought dead”.
An FIR has been lodged at Diphu Police Station by Ranger Officer, Eastern Range, Rangaphar, DR Rongpi in this regard.
Meanwhile, a search resulted in the recovery of an SBBL gun with two 12 bore empty cartridges, a 12 bore live cartridge, and two mobile handsets. Fifteen rounds of bullets were fired by the patrolling team.
Acccording to Rongpi, the six persons were rhino poachers. “They were hiding in the area for quite some time and on seeing the patrolling team they started to fire at them,” he said.
Till the filing of this report, the deceased remained unidentified.
