Guwahati: Informing that 182 MT of vegetables and fruits grown by the state farmers have been exported to different foreign destinations from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati till now, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that steps were being taken to export state agriculture products by steamers too, in days to come.
Flagging off a cargo flight carrying pumpkins produced by Assam farmers to Dubai at the LGBI Airport on Thursday, Sonowal said, “Our industries department is taking steps to export agriculture products produced by Assam farmers by steamers from Pandu port in city to Bay of Bengal through the Brahmaputra.”
Such initiative will definitely help to achieve the state government target to double the income of Assam farmers by 2022, he added.
In his speech at the LGBI, Sonowal said that the state farmers produce had already been exported to markets of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc., from the LGBI Assam.
“It is heartening to see our farmers giving a new lease of life to the agri sector & economy. The #COVID19 challenge has given us huge opportunities to explore our strengths. The efforts of Assam’s farmers & Govt agencies are opening up new avenues for us in the post-covid world,” Sonowal said in his Twitter.
“Realising the vision of PM Shri @narendramodi ji, glad to flag off a consignment of pumpkins from Air Cargo Terminal of LGBI Airport, Guwahati to Dubai along with Ministers Shri @cmpatowary & Shri @ATULBORA2,” he added.
Sonowal claimed that the state’s farmers and agri-entrepreneurs did business worth Rs 357 crore during the lockdown by exporting agricultural products to various parts of the country.
He said this during his recent visit to Maloibari in Kamrup Metro district, he took stock of agricultural activities being carried out by the farmers there. Sonowal said that Assam can become self-reliant in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries etc., and farmers have shown that the state can achieve its developmental goals by engaging in agriculture and allied sectors with renewed vigour.
