Guwahati: The Hailakandi police in Assam realised fines of Rs 60,000 in a single day on May 27, from people for not wearing masks.

Around 110 people were charged a fine of Rs 500 each on Wednesday to set an exemplar that following precautionary rules like wearing a mask in public places is not an option, but mandatory.

Of the total fines, Hailakandi PS realised Rs 11,500; Algapur PS Rs 6,000; Katlicherra PS Rs 4,500; Lala PS Rs 21,500, Panchgram PS Rs 6,000; and Ramnathpur PS Rs 10,500.

Informing about this on Twitter, Hailakandi police wrote, “Let us save the Society from Covid-19 Pandemic by wearing Mask/ Face cover. Hailakandi district Police was constrained to collect Rs 60000.00 in a single day (27/5/’20) as Fine from persons found not wearing Mask/ Face cover. #MaskUpAssam.”

This is the data from one district, earlier on May 24, Assam Police tweeted that it has collected Rs 27,31,500 as fine from 5,463 people for not wearing a mask in public places.

It said, “Till now Rs.27,31,500/- has been realised as fines for not wearing a Mask in public spaces. That means 5,463 people were fined across Assam.

To ensure your own safety and that of everyone around, we request everyone to always wear a Mask in public.”
