235 Indians evacuated from Bangladesh; 130 through Tripura border

Agartala: A total of 235 Indian nationals, including residents of Tripura, Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya, were evacuated through land borders, said Riva Ganguly Das, high commissioner of India in Bangladesh.

Addressing media persons, Das said that around 235 Indian nationals had expressed their desire to go back to India from Bangladesh and accordingly they were evacuated through three locations.

Around 130 Tripura residents arrived from Bangladesh in a bus to Agartala-Akhaura integrated check post. “The Indian nationals include a little more than hundred Tripura residents, around hundred residents of Assam and some from Meghalaya and Manipur. Samples of the returnees will be collected and they would be placed under facility quarantine,” Das said.

Earlier, state law minister Ratan Lal Nath informed that all the stranded passengers of different Norteastern states would be quarantined in their respective states.

“Quarantine for Assamese passengers would be done in Karimganj district, Hotel Imphal would be used for passengers from Manipur, passengers from Meghalaya would be quarantined in their respective districts, and passengers from Tripura will be quarantined at two hospitals in Agartala — Government Medical College & GBP Hospital,” Nath said.

Tripura West Lok Sabha MP Pratima Bhoumik said that a total of 129 people have returned from Bangladesh and samples of all the returnees are being collected.

“All of them would be placed in the facility quarantine for seven days and after their samples test negative they would be released with advice of mandatory home quarantine,” Bhoumik said.

She also said that the chief minister would start visiting 58 blocks spread across eight districts from May 29 to inspect ground realities and steps taken to combat coronavirus. “The health department has arranged all the required measures before their arrival to the state and after proper checkup and collection of their samples they would be shifted to facility quarantine,” Bhoumik added.

Meanwhile, a total of 136 Indian nationals including 46 Tripura residents currently under imprisonment in Kuwait would be deported to Indian on May 29.

A direct flight will drop them in Guwahati and from there they will be brought back to Agartala in two buses by the state government. Their samples will also be tested before sending them in home quarantine.
