Girls preparing organic pickles in Assam’s Kokrajhar district

Kokrajhar: While the nationwide lockdown amid COVID-19 pandemic has brought the nation to a standstill, a group of girls from a Kokrajhar-based NGO in Assam is making full use of the available time to produce organic pickles with locally-available mangoes. What’s adding to their success story is that the pickles are getting a good response in the market.

Nearly 50 girl members of Destination Girls Home, an institution run by the non-profit Nedan Foundation in Kokrajhar, has been taking the inoitiative to prepare the pickles and in the process opening up an opportunity to earn some income for themselves.

The idea is to make the members of the NGO skilled in making pickles of various types as well as to raise some funds to manage their home and continue studies, said Digambar Narzary, chairman of the NGO.

Informing that pickles are being made only during the lockdown period, Narzary said that the members of the Destination Girls Home are also involved in producing particularly mango pickles.

“We have produced over 500 kg pickles so far. Members of the NGO are selling these pickles and we are getting good response from the market,” the chairman of the NGO said.

Organic pickles in bottles

He said that the pickles will also be available online.

“Anyone interested can also collect the pickles from the office of the NGO at Kadamtola in Kokrajhar. Very soon, these pickles in attractive bottles will be displayed on our Facebook page and website so that people can buy them online as well,” Narzary said, adding that this year, despite the lockdown, they have produced over 500 kg pickles.

“We hope to raise Rs 80,000 by selling pickles this year. This will help the girl inmates of the Destination Girls Home to survive for at least four months,” he added.
