Tinsukia: A 24-year-old youth, who had returned to the state from Tamil Nadu, tested positive for novel coronavirus in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Friday night.
According to sources, the swab sample of the boy, hailing from Dhola in Tinsukia district, was first collected in Jorhat, later in Tinsukia the same day, after he reached the upper Assam town in an escorted government bus. Since then, he was in quarantine and is now being shifted to hospital.
Talking to EastMojo, additional deputy commissioner (health) of Tinsukia, Monjit Borkakoti, said, “The patient, who was kept in a facility centre at Mandhania Bhawan, has been evacuated and shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in neighbouring Dibrugarh district.”
The patient had arrived on May 18 with a travel history from Tamil Nadu, Borkakoti added.
Responding to a question, Borkakoti said that Mandhania Bhawan, a marriage hall, will be declared a containment zone after the process is completed.
According to sources, till the time of filing this news report, over 1,100 persons had arrived in Tinsukia by trains and buses over the last few days. “Altogether, 35 persons among them were kept at Mandhania Bhawan.”
On Friday, Assam witnessed its largest single day surge in number of positive cases with 49 new cases taking the total number of cases to 259.
“The youth came to Guwahati in a train and reached Jorhat town on May 18 after which his swab sample was collected,” deputy commissioner of Jorhat Roshni A Korati told this correspondent, adding that he was sent to his home district Tinsukia for quarantine in a government bus under the cover of escort.
However, it is not clear how many passengers accompanied him during his journey upto Tinsukia.
