Guwahati: Swiggy, the food delivery app has started home delivery of alcohol in Jharkhand via its wine shop category in the app. The service started in Ranchi with plans to expand services to other cities by the end of this week.
Its rival brand Zomato also stated alcohol delivery in Ranchi and will expand to seven more cities in Jharkhand in the next couple of days. A spokesperson form the company added that Zomato believes in technology-enabled home delivery of alcohol and that this would lead to the responsible consumption of alcohol and also promote physical distancing.
State government’s choice to allow alcohol sales amid the lockdown had prompted long lines and congestion outside wine shops. That too without following any norms of physical distancing. Odisha and Haryana are also likely to start home delivery of alcohol soon.
Anuj Rathi, VP of Products at Swiigy in a statement said that by enabling home delivery of alcohol they are also generating additional business for retail outlets all the while solving the problem of overcrowding by promoting physical distancing.
To guarantee safe conveyance of liquor and in compliance with relevant laws, Swiggy has introduced compulsory age checks and user authentication to complete the orders. Clients can finish their instant age check by transferring an image of their valid government ID, followed by a selfie.
Moreover, all requests will carry an OTP which should be given by the client at the time of delivery. This is being done to set a limit for the amount which is being ordered. The organization has also collaborated with retailers and has essentially prepared its delivery partners for this recently propelled service.
While the Jharkhand government gave its approval to Swiggy, the Bengaluru-headquartered organization is in conversations with numerous other state governments to acquire every single necessary permission.
