Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma has announce one-time financial grant to active community quarantine centres

Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to give a one-time financial grant of Rs 5,000 to each active community quarantine centre arranged by the traditional village administration.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma announced the decision while responding to zero hour notice moved by Nongpoh Congress MLA Mayralborn Syiem during the reassembled budget session of the Assembly.

Sangma informed that the Rs 5,000 will be given to each of the active community quarantine centres as a one-time grant from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

Due to the lack of capacity in the quarantine centres set up by the government, several communities have taken it upon themselves to set up community quarantine centres.

Emphasising on how home quarantine was not safe, Syiem said, “I have seen people not following norms and protocols. I am afraid that home quarantine is not safe especially for those coming back from different parts of the country. Therefore, I sincerely urge the state government to increase the number of institutional quarantine centres in the state.”

Responding to this, Sangma said that it would be next to impossible for the government to put all the 8,000 to 9,000 returnees under institutional quarantine. However, the government has decided to conduct both tests — Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit and RT-PCR Test — on all the people returning to the state.

Sangma said that such returnees will be kept in quarantine centres till the test results come out. “The RDT and RT-PCR can be a very strong mechanism to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Sangma.

Sangma informed that a total of 7,050 stranded people have returned to the state till date.

“Efforts are on to bring back all stranded citizens back to the state within two weeks time. I have personally written to the ministry of civil aviation to permit requisition of aircraft based on payment as many are willing to pay,” said Sangma.
