With 85,940 COVID-19 cases, India now crosses China’s tally

Guwahati: On Saturday, May 16, the total tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India reached 85,940, crossing the count of the world’s most populous country, China, of 82,941 confirmed cases.

As indicated by the most recent data by the health ministry on Saturday morning, India on Friday recorded 3,970 new cases, taking the total tally of the COVID-19 cases to 85,941 from the prior 81,970. As of now, there are 53,035 active cases in the nation, however, 30,152 patients have been cured.

China, on the other hand, has a total tally of 82,941 COVID-19 confirmed cases out of which 78,219 cases recovered so far and 4,633 deaths so far. There have been some new cases that have emerged from the city of Wuhan which was the epicenter of the deadly virus. Moreover, less than 100 people are now undergoing treatment in China.

Globally, India stands in the 11th most-affected nation; however, the top ten have crossed over 1 lakh. With 14 lakh cases, the US has topped the charts which is followed by over two lakh cases in Russia, UK, Spain, Italy and Brazil, and over one lakh cases in France, Germany, Turkey, and Iran.

In India, on Friday (May 15), positive cases have emerged from Kashmir, Kerala, Karnataka, Bihar, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, to name a few. States such as Karnataka, Bihar, Jammu, and Kashmir have already crossed the 1,000-mark with regards to the number of people that are found to be COVID-19 positive. Moreover, Maharashtra, the most affected case in India, reported 1,576 new cases, taking the tally to 29,100 and its death toll has risen to 1,068. With 434 new cases, even Tamil Nadu has crossed the 10,000 mark. Gujarat, on the other hand, is also inching towards the 10,000-mark with 340 more people being tested positive, pushing the total tally to 9,932.

With Lockdown 3.0 just nearing to its end, various state governments have taken strides to curb the infection flow. This includes Assam, where CM Sarbananda Sonowal said that the state has written to the Centre urging the extension of lockdown by two more weeks. Even in Chhattisgarh, CM Bhupesh Baghel has urged the Prime Minister to keep the state boundaries closed except for migrants and essential services for the next few months.
