Imphal: Four days after a 20-year-old Manipuri girl, Chong Hoi Misao, was racially abused and assaulted, a local court in Haryana sent three of the accused to jail following their arrest by Haryana Police from Gurugram area in the state on Thursday.
All the accused have been charged under Sections 323, 34, 341, and SC/ST Atrocities Act.
The incident took place on May 10 when an elderly lady, her son and her daughter-in-law hit Misao to unconsciousness after racially abusing her.
While returning from her friend’s house, Misao was allegedly stopped by an elderly woman who interrupted her from passing through the road stating that it was her private property. She allegedly abused her in a racially-charged tone deterring her from passing by the street in front of her house.
When Misao requested her to talk with civility, the girl was again met with verbal abuse and was allegedly called ‘corona’. She then said that she would take the matter to the police if need be. To this, the woman replied, “Police are on our side.”After the altercation, the accused started hitting her with sticks. Some of the sticks even landed on Misao’s head which rendered her unconscious. She was then rescued by some local people who then called up the police.
“The CT scan showed no grievous signs of injury, however, the doctor had said that there are some internal injuries which would require some time to recover,” said Joel, Misao’s friend.
Thanking Bhopen, who was one of the first respondent to her distress call, Misao is grateful to everyone who helped her during the time of crisis.
“I would also like to thank Orenthung Lotha and James Nambu Riamei, members of North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESCH), the Kuki Students Organisation, the Meitei Students Association who came together and worked as a group in such a distressful time of mine,” she said.
“People should learn to love one another and accept the fact that we too are Indians, we too belong to this nation we call our motherland,” added Misao, who is taking shelter at NESCH.
