Agartala: The results of the primary and secondary level students have improved in the past two years after the BJP-IPFT government took measures to develop the education system, said Tripura education minister Ratan Lal Nath.
Speaking at a press conference, Nath said that two years after the government took measures and started ‘Notun Disha’ scheme, the education system in elementary and secondary level has improved in the state.
“The education system in Tripura was lacking due to many reasons and after the report of the National Achievement Survey (NAS) came in 2017 along with the Annual Status Education report of Pratham Foundation, a private voluntary education trust, the reality was exposed,” Nath said.

He also said that the NAS report had found that only 62% students in the elementary level were eligible to study mathematics in their respective classes. Similarly, 59% of them were eligible to study science and 62% in social science papers.
Earlier in March last year, evaluation of students from Class III to Class VIII under ‘Disha’ project, also named as ‘Baseline Survey’, was conducted between February 25 and 28.
There were 3,20,936 students in these five classes; among them, 3,16,611 students participated in this evaluation and testing programme with an attendance percentage of 98.83%.
“According to survey report, 60% (51,599 students) of Class V cannot read Bengali language book of Class II, 46% of students cannot subtract and 81% students don’t know how to divide. Similarly, 36% of students (54,066 of Class VIII) fail to read Bengali of Class II and 67% don’t know how to subtract while 5,800 students of Class VIII can’t recognise ‘11’ in digits,” Nath added.

Speaking further, Nath said that two years on, the results of the primary segment from Classes III to V have improved with pass percentage of 88% of the 1,50,168 students enrolled, and 98% students in the elementary segment.
“The figures and numbers have improved in the last two years as in 2019, 69% students in primary segment and 43% in elementary segment were found eligible to study in their respective classes,” Nath said.
Speaking further, he said that after implementing ‘Notun Disha’ in January last year to develop the baseline education system and develop the quality of education, the students were benefited.
“The scheme was categorised into ‘Sadhana’ and ‘Prerana’ groups to help the students based on their performance in the examinations. A series of parent teachers meetings was held to help the students do better results,” Nath added.

Tripura also started the centrally regulated question papers for all the government schools from the primary level with an aim to make them fit to compete with the students studying in different levels.
Currently, Tripura has 4,398 government and government aided schools apart from 335 private schools in which around 5 lakh students are studying across the state.
