Imphal: Former Manipur chief minister and senior Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Saturday sought an approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing a special from the state for stranded migrants and labourers of different states to Bihar.
The initiative is part of the Congress party’s proactive approach in helping the stranded migrant workers and labourers owing to the ongoing nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.
A similar letter was also written to the minister of railways Piyush Goyal for a permission to grant special train so that stranded labourers could reach their home states.
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader informed that migrant workers and labourers, mostly from Bihar, have been stranded in the state due to COVID-19 lockdown and expressed to return to their native places.
The CLP in a meeting held at the official residence of Ibobi Singh in Imphal decided to evacuate them on priority basis by arranging a train from Jiribam railway station to Patna in Bihar meeting the cost of the train fares, he said.
Ibobi Singh further stated that keeping in view in the interest of the stranded labourers’ well-being from various states in Manipur amid the pandemic, the CLP expected that PM Modi would grant the permission of the special train as earliest as possible.
Accordingly, the train movement for the evacuation of the stranded migrant workers in Manipur could be able to carried out, it added.
Ibobi Singh also expressed his hope that Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh would extend support in ensuring the possibility of the train permission and necessary administration coordination for the evacuation mission.
Earlier, the Opposition party in the state had announced to bear the travel expenses of those stranded citizens who are returning home by train amid the lockdown.
Meanwhile, the state government evacuated a total of 1,200 stranded citizens by providing a special train from Chennai on Sunday, the first state in the Northeast India to bring back natives stranded in different parts of the country by train.
