Sikkim: Army, IAF & ITBP pull off daring high altitude rescue

Battling near inaccessible terrain and severe weather conditions they rescue crew members of IAF helicopters and Air Dispatch crew stranded in north Sikkim

New Delhi: Indian Army and Indian Airforce helicopters teamed up Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) troops on the ground to execute this daring operation in the icy heights above 15500 feet in North Sikkim.

On Thursday an Indian Airforce medium-lift transport helicopter M--17 was on a routine flight on Charten to Muguthang when it was forced to make an emergency landing due to inclement weather. It managed to land at a remote location but was damaged leaving a crew of four and two army personnel exposed to the harsh environment. They reached out for help and a rescue operation was launched.

Immediately on receipt of information, on 07 May 2020, Thursday, rescue columns of the Army, who were also accompanied by the Himveers aka ITBP personnel set off on foot traversing the dangerous terrain which was accompanied with equally bad weather to reach the stranded helicopter’s landing site They were also accompanied by and ITBP doctor to provide medical aid to the stranded.

Once the weather cleared the next day, 8th May, a combination of Army and Air Force helicopters were launched at the crack of dawn. The team executed a daring landing on an unprepared ground at an altitude of 15500 ft, and rescued the stranded personnel.

The capabilities of men and machines were pushed to the limits during the rescue of the stranded personnel, highlighting the joint manship between the forces said a statement by the army.

The helicopter dispatch crew also showcased unending spirit as they remained stranded in such a hostile terrain for several hours in a stretch before any help arrived.
