Agartala: Amid the spread of coronavirus aka COVID-19 in the state, 10 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested by the Tripura Police on Friday from the outskirts of Agartala.
All 10 Bangladeshi youths, who had illegally entered India through the international border seven months ago with the help of agents, were arrested from Rajnagar area of Joypur, which is close to the Indo-Bangla border in West Tripura district.
Speaking with reporters, Md Masud Rana, who is one among the arrested Bangladeshis, said that they had crossed the border seven months ago and started working at the construction sites in the area as dail-wage labourers.
“We came here for work purpose and stayed at a house in Bitterban slum area. Due to the lockdown, we do not have any work and food to eat. Therefore, we were returning to Bangladesh,” Rana said.
The arrested persons are aged between 19 and 36 years and have been identified as, Masud Rana, Md Abdul Alim, Md Nurul Islam, Md Jamirul Islam, Md. Masud Rana, Md Jabbar Ali, Mohhammed Nabir, Md Nur Jamal, Md Mafiz Sk, Md Aminul Sk. All of them are residents of Chapai district of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the additional director-general (law and order) of Tripura Police, Rajiv Singh, said that all 10 of them were apprehended by the police during investigation. All of them had entered the Indian territory around six to seven months ago and now they would be produced in court, as per law.
The arrest of these Bangladeshi nationals has raised question mark over the security arrangements around the international border.
Meanwhile, 86 jawans from 138th and 86th bn of BSF have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last five days taking the total number to 88 in state.
The state government has asked for an inquiry report from the inspector general of BSF Tripura Frontier with the information of origin of the spread and steps taken by the BSF to avert further spread.
Tripura shares 856 km-long international borders with Bangladesh. The borders have been sealed restricting the movement of people from one nation to the other. However, import and export of goods and raw materials have continued.
